At the mid-way point for Global Entrepreneurship Week Ottawa, we've already established the fact that Ottawa is Canada’s top city when it comes to recognizing the importance of our entrepreneurs. Not only that, #GEWOttawa has more events than cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Detroit, with 54 #GEWOttawa events across the region, nearly double the amount of last year’s first-ever entrepreneurship week in Ottawa.

While the #GEWOttawa team is working hard at getting the word out in social networks, kudos to Ottawa's mainstream media community for doing their part to make our region a welcoming place for innovators and wealth creators. What I like most about this year's coverage is the willingness of reporters, producers and editors to work with us to bring entrepreneurs into TV and radio studios or into online and print stories.

This not only gets people out to the fantastic #GEWOttawa events like this year's very successful Mentor Madness arranged by Invest Ottawa's Business Advisor of Entrepreneurship, Peter Stewart, but shines a valuable media spotlight on newborn entrepreneurs and products.

Kids see these stories and say "Hey, I could do that!" Parents see them and say "Hey, that CEO is my neighbour - now I can see why she's smiling so much since she went out on her own!" Policymakers and politicians feel confident about their funding decisions in support of startups and emerging companies. And overall, we create essential community can-do spirit that in turn creates more companies, more jobs, and more dynamism in Ottawa's economy.

It's working, and a huge thank-you to our media partners for stepping up!

Here's a selection of what we count today as 20 media stories on #GEWOttawa and our amazing crop of entrepreneurs, mentors, and business and policy leaders. You can get all the updates at Invest Ottawa's media page.

Startup Weekend helps entrepreneurs fast-track their ventures (Ottawa Citizen – Nov 10, 2012)

OTTAWA — When an Ottawa man’s wife gave birth to their first child six months ago, there was no easy to notify friends and family.

“I would love to be able to call one number, leave a voice message and it will then distribute that voice message to all my friends and family and they’ll all know what’s going down,” Kory Gorsky said.
